Cars, bikes and fine wine

We picked up a rental car today to tour the sights outside of Adelaide [Adelaide-travel-guide-150526]. First stop was Mt Lofty Summit to get a birds eye view of the city and surrounds.

Next was nearby Hahndorf, pretty German town.

The highlight of the day for Kim was the National Motor Museum at Birdwood which had an impressive collection of cars and motorcycles.

Driving north through the barren landscape (three year drought, I understand), we reached the Barossa Valley ... home to many famous vineyards. We dropped in to see Jacob and Wolf at Jacob's Creek and Wolf Blass to sample a few of their wines before heading back to Adelaide.

Back to the Festival City

We ferried back to the mainland in the morning. Adelaide is like a ghost town during the public holidays ... there weren't many places open for lunch apart from Chinatown. The streets were deserted and most malls were closed. So for us, Adelaide didn't feel very festive at all ... it is promoted as the Festival City as it plays host to many arty festivals.

They haven't made the big change that New Zealand has in terms of relaxing trading hours ... doesn't bother me as I’m not a shopper at all. This is the way New Zealand used to be!!! I love it!!!

After a rest, we bussed out to Port Adelaide ... it had some old nice buildings and a market selling the typical old stuff (eewwwww!) but one man's junk is another man's antique.

Penneshaw in the morning light

We didn't really see Penneshaw yesterday as it as dark when we got in from our tripping around. We also go to see our hostel in the morning light!

Penguin spotting

We stayed the night at the local youth hostel opposite the Penguin Centre in Penneshaw [Penneshaw-travel-guide-156925] (the ferry terminal town, one of the larger towns but not the largest). Perfect for seeing the fairy penguins coming ashore in the evening.

Kangaroo Island - Galapagos of Australia

View 2009 Adelaide & Kangaroo Island on alexchan's travel map.

The time difference (Auckland vs Adelaide) worked in our favour when it came to waking up early for our 0620 pickup. We were collected by bus to connect to the ferry to Kangaroo Island ... the self-proclaimed Galapagos of Australia.

As there is no public transport on the island and no rental cars for the period of our travel, we had to ... eeeks ... join a bus tour! That was the only way for us to see Kangaroo Island this Easter.

It would have been better in a rental car with lots of long stops, spread across two days rather than compressing it into one. On the other hand, the guides and the commentaries were good ... and the combination of the ferry, connecting bus and tours were good value.
